Walk In My Shoes: Stop Stigmatizing The Homeless

Homeless Not Hopeless: Stop Stigmatizing The Homeless

Throughout the world, many societal concerns are often disregarded and neglected while the majority distract themselves with trivial things in life. One particularly ignored and increasing issue is homelessness and the services we provide or lack thereof to assist them. Homelessness is a problem that is prevalent in urban areas such as NYC and will only continue to progress as populations increase and the cost of living rises. Although there is a common misperception surrounding the homeless (such as homelessness being a product of personal choices), one isn’t truly aware of the circumstances beyond their control. Therefore, they should not be mistreated nor criminalized due to the effects they face of an unjust society. It is our responsibility to care for those in these unfortunate situations because without our contribution, life is brutal and much harder.

Homeless individuals have long been stigmatized and blamed for their situations without consideration nor sympathy. Many are quick to presume that the displaced are lazy, addicts, mentally unstable, and most commonly that it’s their fault they ended up where they are in life. According to the following multimedia source “We’re Not Trash:’ Homeless People Fight Stigma In Moving Video,” Goldberg states “We recently interviewed a number of homeless people to give them the chance to address the standard stereotypes passersby are quick to label them with, and dispelled each one” (Goldberg, Eleanor.“’We’re Not Trash:’ Homeless People Fight Stigma In Moving Video.” HuffPost, HuffPost, 2 Oct. 2015). The video focuses on several people who live on the streets who are strong and dedicated, and who defy false assumptions made about them. It elaborates on how homeless people are human beings as well despite these stereotypes, no different from you and I. In order to eliminate the misconceptions associated with homelessness, we should engage with the individuals in these unfortunate situations. Without this communication, it is difficult to understand someone’s context and as a result, easy to adhere to a stigma. (Video Down Below)

This shows the harsh and heartbreaking reality of the homeless. Many have become numb to the sight but yet are quick to make assumptions.

In addition to faulty stereotypes, the displaced also face many challenges both emotional and physical. There are numerous saddening stories of homeless people, including their experiences of being thrown out, struggling to get a job, struggling to obtain a meal, getting beaten and robbed, etc. The article “Eyes of the homeless reveal stories of heartache, hope,” by Jae Hong and Brian Melly, includes real experiences of those who are homeless, demonstrating the hardships and obstacles many have faced. When speaking about one of the homeless victims (Harris), Hong and Melly state, “Harris said he has had AIDS for 30 years. When medication stopped working, he got depressed and was evicted. Now he feels like an outcast, vulnerable and struggling to survive” (Hong, Jae, and Brian Melley. “Eyes of the Homeless Reveal Stories of Heartache, Hope.” AP NEWS, Associated Press, 7 Nov. 2017). The writers also include Harris’ own words stating “I’ve been beaten, robbed, chased… People steal your tents and your tarps and your clothes. I’ve lost everything I owned.” This provides insight on just a quarter of what so many experience and how devastating these effects have on a person, which is why judgment shouldn’t be passed on these individuals nor mistreatment.

As a result of stereotypes and unfortunate circumstance, many homeless people are unjustifiably criminalized, harassed, and mistreated. Based on the article “Building A Movement To End Homelessness,” the criminalization of homelessness refers to “measures that prohibit life-sustaining activities such as sleeping or camping, eating, sitting, and/or asking for money/resources in public spaces” (“Criminalization Of Homelessness.” National Coalition for the Homeless, National Coalition, 2019). The article further explains that many who are forced to carry out these life-sustaining activities in public spaces have been penalized despite the lack of adequate affordable housing and shelter space. Overall, these measures prove to be counterproductive to ending homelessness, not only does it violate their rights but adds to their difficult situations as well. From the petition “Stop Criminalizing Homelessness in New York City” the writer firmly states “It is not illegal to be poor. It is not illegal to be homeless. Those living in poverty and are homeless are trying to figure out where their next meal is coming from, dealing with stigma, and unfortunately laws and policies are making their situation even more difficult.” (Flannelly, Riyan. “Sign the Petition” Change.org, 2016,). Ultimately, the homeless should not be criminalized because every day is a battle, whether being misjudged or figuring out where to sleep, what to eat, etc. and to be picked on for that is demoralizing and inhumane.

Altogether, the homeless are no different from us, therefore shouldn’t be treated in any rude or discriminatory demeanor. Some people disagree with the mindset that the homeless are disruptive and should be held responsible for their actions as well as choices. Applying that perspective justifies passing judgment on individuals you don’t know or their situations which I don’t agree with. Regarding my personal life, a member of my family had become homeless, living out of his car as well as house hopping. Witnessing what was said about him and knowing otherwise was eye-opening as to how people are so quick to say something without knowing the facts. Overall, it is important to acknowledge and be mindful of the everyday struggles and suffering of the homeless because they don’t deserve to be stereotyped nor mistreated.

Chapter 8 : Connecting the Parts

This Chapter is focus on how to connect all of your writing’s separate parts. We have four ways to connect the sentences that we write.
Those are :
Use transitions.
Use pointing words.
Repeat key terms and phrases.
Repeat Yourself – But with a difference.
Example :
Many people like winter due to the cold weather. However, I prefer summer because I like hot weather.
Transitions :
Addition: also,and,in fact,moreover,furthermore, in addition.
Elaboration: actually,to put it another way,by extension,to put it bluntly,in other words, to put it succinctly,in short, ultimately.
Example: after all,for instance,as an illustration,specifically,consider,to take a case in point,for example.
Cause and effect: accordingly, so,as a result,then,consequently,therefore,hence,thus.
Contrast: although,nevertheless,but,nonetheless,by contrast,on the contrary, conversely,on the other hand,despite,regardless,even though,whereas,however,while yet,in contrast.
Concession: admittedly, naturally, although it is true,of course,to be sure.

Research Proposal.

My proposal is to talk about “organic food”. Some of the advantages of eating organic food is that it does not use herbicides or chemical pesticides.Take care of the environment by not using chemicals, toxic wastes, or air, soil or water pollution with products that can affect biodiversity. Animals do not receive antibiotics or hormone and it is better for human health. While I was doing my research I also realized that organic food has its disadvantages as a shorter shelf life of food due to lack of chemical preservatives. The products are much more expensive than the traditional ones, due to the shortage of supply, due to production times, and due to the lower density of crops or offspring. Many people prefer organic nutrition because they have many benefits, “Taking care of the planet while taking care of your health”. People who do this style of eating is not inhibited from eating things they like, since everything that has been cultivated and processed naturally. This is a good topic to talk about because it can give many people information about how to take care of their health through what they eat and how they can take care of the planet. To carry out this research I plan to read different articles that can help me understand different people’s points of views, advantages and disadvantages of organic food.
To carry out my article I will carry out an investigation on the percentage of people who prefer organic food and I will look for graphics to show it.

Why do students dropout from college?

In New York, many students drop out for a number of reasons. A lot of time it has to do with money, time, or an unexpected emergency where they become unable to keep attending college or not go in the first place. One of the biggest reasons that students dropout of college is because of the lack of funds to keep going. Many students take out school loans, but that isn’t always enough. Between the costs of classes, books, rent, and just trying to survive is not that easy. In manhattan, college is more expensive than in other parts of New York since that is where many tourists go to explore because manhattan is one of the places you should visit since it is known as the city that never sleeps, due to that, to attend one of the colleges from there it could be pricey. According to “https://www.collegefactual.com/colleges/manhattan-college/paying-for-college/” Manhattan college tuition can cost between “$119,733 and $376,338 For a Four Year Degree. Between $59,265 and $181,571 For a Two Year Degree”. This shows how money can be a problem for the people with low economy which can lead students to drop out of college. Many students go into college with their major undeclared, which is completely fine. However, as you get farther along in college, you are going to have to eventually declare a major and just by attending to classes you have already spend some money when you don’t even know if you took the classes you were supposed to.

adolescence

Topic Adolescence:

According to what I know of adolescence is the transitional stage from childhood to adulthood. These changes occur in both mental and physical appearance and need to develop new social relationships and an increasing sense of responsibility and independence. That is to say, in the social development of adolescence many changes begin to happen, which includes, finding your identity and new relationships also teens take distances from their parents and begin to get closer to interact with kids of their age.

Based on my research I want to learn so many things which include the main social task of adolescents? I also want to know compare the role of parent to the role of peers during adolescent identity formation? And role of confusion? Again i want to find out the categories of identity formation? In or between what age does adolescent take place? How does teens form their identities? Do most teenagers eventually figure out a stable identity for themselves, or do most teenagers stay in crisis for a long time? Last but not the least why are peer groups important to identity formation?

What kind:  my research will base on observational methods and survey method to observe the role of parent vs role of peers identity formation?

How: by observing teenagers behavior towards their parents and peers. Also to give out surveys for both teens and parents so to get feedback from both groups.

Where: it will be based more specific in schools where teenagers gather the most and for the parents at workplace where they spend most of their time.

Which part: in the Bronx as a whole to the neighborhood

When: from now to the end of the semester, which will be end of October till mid December.

Why: because I want to learn more about teenagers and improve my knowledge in it and so on.

Tourist attractions

The topic under consideration is tourism. This topic is very interesting because there are many subtopics such as hospitality, food, and country, but my main focus will be on tourist attraction. Throughout this research I expect to find out a lot about tourist attractions in New York because I have not seen or visited some of these tourist attractions and doing this topic will give me a chance to explore and expand my knowledge on all tourist attractions. Typically most tourist attractions are considered for business, pleasure, accommodating or entertaining, so I would like to know the history of each tourist attractions and why is that place considered for tourist attraction. People believe that attractions are for its inherent or exhibited natural or cultural value but I believe tourist attractions have historical significance, natural or built beauty, sometimes offering leisure and amusement. I will be researching New York City because United State is one of the countries with the highest rate for tourism and has a lot of tourist attractions. Personally I want to find out why New York has the highest rate for tourist attractions in the United States and what effect does the city has on tourists. I want to find out why some attractions are on a tour guide and others are not but are considered to be tourist attractions. My map will show where tourist attractions are located, including the ones that are not presented on a tour guide and which city in New York has the highest rate for tourist attractions for the past 5 years.

Fashion In New York City

Around the world we have seen how much fashion has expanded and become important to people. We are aware of the latest brands and the sales that go on in the stores we shop in on a daily. In New York City we see Soho and 42nd street to be two of the places in where the streets and traffic are in chaos starting from the beginning till the end of the day. We see the stores overcrowded and tourist people walking along our streets with shopping bags. The brands that often catch our attention and has us coming in and out of them are Forever 21, American Eagle, Urban Outfitter, Thift shops, and many more. We get excited to see these brands have sales or discounts on holidays or within the week. Fashion has become a way we can express ourselves. We see everyone has a different and unique style from one another. There are people who like the style of vintage, casual, chic, artsy, and sexy. Fashion gives people a sense of freedom and feel beautiful each time they put on an outfit or when they have planned one. Fashion has allowed people to make bring their ideals my making their own clothing line or allowing artist who love to draw and paint bring their ideas onto their clothing. Fashion is not only based on clothing but on footwear, accessories, and makeup. When we are getting dressed, we look at every little detail. Such as if our hair came out just as we planned, does our footwear match with the outfit we picked out, what kind of accessories will we want gold or silver? and makeup will we want a dramatic or natural look. Fashion is based on the trend, unique styles, and a way to express ourselves

Research Proposal

My Research Topic would be about Currency Trading. Currency Trading is making a rise, with numerous people whether they are a student or people with a degree. Anyone and almost everyone is using this make to make money.  But I feel like it is a pyramid scheme as in they use your money to fuel the market but you see any profit in going it. The main reasons why I chose this topic is to answer so skeptics I have about this and to see if it actually works or if it really is just a scheme. So the main questions I would be asking is, how the currency market work? Do you really earn your money back in reasonable amount of time? I know you would not receive your money back in a few days I was just wondering when will you get it back. Also I feel like this could lead to people finding ways to make money so that they are less homeless people on the streets. This could improve a lot of communities but it could also destroy the economy if more people begin to trade that could lead to the dollar being worthless. Thus putting numerous countries into a deeper debt. So That would be a question do research as well. I would focus on the is the cause and who it would affect everyone as well as the economy. In all my Essay would summarize the Currency Market and who it affects the economy and people’s lives.

Research Proposal by Jean Carlos Feliz Green

Last Thursday, I went to my english class and my professor Michael gave me and my partners our last assignment for this course. For this assignment, my research proposal will be “New York Tourism”. I chose this topic due to the fact that I have always liked the tourism, how it works, how you can enjoy it and New York City is an excellent stage to talk about this topic. I have been thinking the whole weekend about this and I decided to talk about the amount and diversity of people who see New York City as a tourist place. It is normal for us to see new york streets like normal places that we visit frequently, but people from other countries see these streets like something new and interesting. I also want to talk about places where you can go if you are doing New York tourism. Having consider that New York City is one of the most popular cities in the world, I would like to talk about some places that every person who visit New York City should go there, including some places that not everyone knows. The last thing that I would like to talk about is how safe is New York City when it comes to sightseeing. I want to show the differences between sightseeing in NYC and sightseeing in other countries.

My plan to do this assignment is basically to read some articles about tourism in New York City and go to some places and ask people around why they think those places are interesting. I also plan to take some photos and maybe use some pictures of places where I have already been to use it in my assignment.

The fight against breast cancer

The fight against breast cancer

Breast cancer is the first cancer in women in both developing and developed countries. My learning will be based on the following questions: first, how can we diagnose breast cancer in women? second, how can we prevent breast cancer in women? and third, what is the symbol of breast cancer in women?. In the United States as everywhere in the world, many women are dying as a result or because of breast cancer. There now the government of America must force preventive measures to reduce the rate of breast cancer mortality in women. Breast cancer most begins in the glandular tissue called  lobules. The fight against breast cancer in women at the national or international  level must be based on noising public awareness of the breast cancer problems because many women do not know overweight  increases the risk of breast cancer especially in menopausal women. In addition many women do not know that having breast cancer significantly increases the risk of developing a second breast cancer. However all women should understand that physical activity is associated with decreased risk off breast cancer. By sensitizing women  then will understand that age heredity women they antecedents but also smocking alcohol overweight one a risk factor for breast cancer. That’s why it is recommended to have a regular gynecologist follow up for all women. Through consultation the gynecologist maybe required to prescribe a mammogram especially if it defects an abnormality.
