Research Proposal – Asthma in the South Bronx

The topic I have chosen for my research proposal is “Asthma in the South Bronx.” I will research the asthma percentages among children and adults, who reside in the South Bronx. Data shows that the highest prevalence of asthma among adults in New York is concentrated in the Bronx. My map will show different areas in the Bronx that are affected due to pollution, which is a major contributing factor to the asthma rates. Asthma rate in the South Bronx are particularly higher than in other areas of the Bronx, due to higher levels of pollution. The reason why children and adults in the South Bronx are so affected by higher pollution levels is because the South Bronx is located underneath three major highways, such as the Major Deegan, the Bruckner, and the Cross Bronx Expressways. Most of the population of the South Bronx consists of two major ethnic groups – African Americans/Blacks and Hispanics/Latinos. Many in the South Bronx have been hospitalized due to asthma and most of the hospitalizations consist of those ethnic groups.

Relating to the Nonstop Metropolis map of “Trash in the city,” the author showed and explained thoroughly how much trash was exposed in the city and the different routes used for waste destinations. However, it didn’t really explain any potential negative effects on the people and communities. The “Trash in the City” map motivated me to study the asthma rates caused by pollution in the Bronx, specifically the South Bronx. I think it’s important to be responsible and take time to observe how pollution affects a specific area and how it affects people’s health. It is especially important for me because I am asthmatic and have family members who also have asthma. Additionally, my family and I reside and travel around the Bronx for school and work. I plan to do more research and study more this topic design my map to meet the criteria.

Essay Proposal

I will write and map how the five boroughs of New York are racially divided and how they differ from one another. I am going to be talking about different times periods including the present. It is clearly shown how supremacists are always pushing immigrants and low-income families away from attractive and tourist places. It is important to talk and develop this kind of topic in order to understand how New York City is racially divided and why. Also, I will talk about all the ways this is being done, for example, some simple things like raising the rent will eventually force low-income families to move farther and farther.   In fact, supremacists constantly try to keep minorities as minorities. I am looking to highlight the contrast in places like the high and lower Manhattan. Or how racially diverse is The Bronx compared to the lower Manhattan when it comes to people actually living there. Also is important to mention how racially divided is New York City when it comes to social justice. It is not a surprise how the black and Latino community are commonly targetted by authorities. Commonly when there is a problem between a white person and a person of color. Often, people of color are found guilty even without certified reasons. I think it is really significant to talk about this because is New York City is the home for thousands of immigrants and they all deserve to be treated equally in terms of public justices, health, and general well-being

Research Proposal

The place that I will be mapping is in the Bronx area and in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The time period in which I will research will be the present, only to make it more relatable making it easier to digest the information. The map will be on barbershops and beauty salons, possessing their own location and their distance between each of them. Each shop and salon has their coverage on one another’s sharing communities, their sharing influences between one another and how each represent some areas of difference demographic either sex or age. Each having a forum for their unique voices to expressing in those communities. The mapped communities that I will cover are in the urban areas, showing the importance of these shops and salons to those neighboring communities around them. The subculture values are valued depending varies eyes that view them this is true, yet the family culture that is is built within these barber shops and salons in their respective neighborhoods isn’t measurable. I will be using google maps for most the illustrations of the maps that I will be using and the google for the basic research, as well as my own personal knowledge of having my own barbershop experience having the same barber for the past 20 years.

Barber shops and Beauty salons are cornerstones in certain community, because of the generational growth that happens within the shops and salons. Where mixture of families are cultivated and nourished with society influences, neighborhood love.

Research Proposal `

i will create a physical map that shows the stream of plastic that passes through NYC. My map will be a alternative of NYC showing the contaminated water passing through different cities. I will research the NYC coast lines to inform about the dangers of plastic. In other words many people don’t care about the plastic epidemic that is damaging our water and body. My map will alert the viewer on the hazardous plastic polluted areas. The problem is many  people of a lack of understanding the topic. Another problem is people low standards for the topic. The last problem is people unwillingness to take action. The objective behind the map is to inform the viewer. The second Objective is to persuade the viewer to take action. The map “Trash in the City” the author made a great map on trash, but not specifically on plastic. The map inspired me to conduct my on research on plastic. The author did good a labeling the trash in the city but didn’t explain the different types of trash being exposed. I believe its important to know the different types of trash and how some have more harm than the others. I plan to observe the different plastic in the water and how it affects our environment. I will conduct a case study, and model the different areas on my map.

city of woman’

The chapter on “city of New York” describes the different cities and different subways.  The author argues  into visibility in particular around question of the native  woman on the inferior clan. The men have the honor and many of them have their names on the street and in museums. We  can see an example on page 88 , a recent essay by Allison Meier. She shows that  there are five statues of the woman’s name in New York  city. Through this chapter, I learned the different between men and   women .

Reflection on city women

City of Women tries to talk about a world where women are in charge. Rebecca gives examples of the many things like streets, buildings, parks etc. that are named after men. This becomes very repetitive and her tone seems condescending. Almost making you feel like the dead men are looking down on you if your a women, putting themselves on a pedestal saying, “you can’t reach this level”.  While there are few statues of women the ones we have are “nobodies” as Rebecca puts it because they don’t have names, ” women are anonymous people who changed fathers for husbands names as they married” while they could have had a great impact on history behind the scenes they weren’t given any recognition. Women have always had to push for their power, Rebecca tries to image how empowered women would have felt if we had a city named after women.

City of Women reflection

In the essay “city of Women” the author spoke about the contribution the women had in New York City. The author argues that New York City is covered in men’s identities that many of women’s achievement were unknown. She talks about the fact that the works of women was forgotten or were never named.  She mentions the work of Allison Meier who noted that there are only five statues of named women in New York City. before that, only men were commemorated in the statuary of New York City.  On page 86-87 you can see that train tracks have woman’s name alongside it but were not mentioned. This essay showed me that not only men who contributed to the city but there are many women who also contributed to the city we live in.

City Of Women Reflection

The City of Women excerpt imbues me with fascination and curiosity.Unfortunately, not being exposed to such knowledge earlier in life as much as the accomplishments and establishments of men, kept me ignorant on this topic. Learning of such greatness and contribution really opens the eyes to see the true power and equality of our women.  This argument also presents an avenue of learning about which person and their actions originated from. For an example, there are song artists Im interested in that I never knew came from NYC. Finding out that females also play a gargantuan part in why the world has the great aspects it does, definitely humbles me into wanting to learn and listen to them way more Than I ever have before.

City of Women

In this piece the author argues that city has to many male ideology the cover our city. As the author tell us  of the subway map of the city, makes notice of all the male name for all the stops. So she flip the script, replacing those names with the names of famous and important women from the city. When you look at the map on pages 86-87,  you can see that subway map stops have been changed into those women names. But that not significant, what is significant is those name there represent those individual women and their actually stops they used to travel from (their home stop).

City of women Revision

The essay “city of love ” the author discuss how women are poorly portrayed in the city of Manhattan. The essay has a good description on the roles of women being equal. For example, Men are portrayed as dominant, so they have more statues in Manhattan. Throughout the essay the author made me think about the different  women statues and how there scattered across New York City. In other words, i agree with the authors argument on how women are poorly portrayed in Manhattan because some jobs and markets in Manhattan do not equally pay women the same as men.To sum up, there are many different ways to explain how women are not equally  portrayed as men, but in this essay the author makes a valid point on how men and women don’t have the same number of statues.
