Accessible but not really: New York City Subway System

In New York, you will never not see just one mode of transportation. There are various types of transportation ranging from buses to trains to taxi’s and many more. Not all forms of these transportation, especially trains are accessible for people with disabilities. My map portrays in two different time periods (1973 and 2019), the level of accessibility of different train stops that disabled people can access. It is important to understand that without these accessible stops, it limits that disabled person quality of life. Also it’s vital to make sure that there is equality among everyone, because we are all human beings with feelings and emotions. Although the Americans with disabilities act was passed in 1990, ensuring equal access, to this day people with disabilities have trouble accessing the trains, which prevents their quality of life, indicating that there should be more accessible train stations.

The Americans with disabilities act was passed in 1990 and ensured equal access to people with disabilities. The ADATA.org website explains what the ADA entails. It states ” The Americans with disabilities act became law in 1990. The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in jobs, schools and transportation and places that are open to the general public.” This quote is explaining when this act was passed and how people with disabilities are protected by it. I agree with the government’s decision to pass this law/act because without it, disabled people would still be treated unfairly. The ADA ensured equal access to people with disabilities. According to the  U.S transportation website, the U.S department of transportation (D.O.T) hosted the Access and Mobility for all summit to raise awareness and make efforts to improve accessibility to trains for people with disabilities. Secretary of transportation Elaine L. Chao states ” A notice of funding opportunity for FTA’s 2020 Mobility for all pilot program, seeks to improve mobility options and access to community services for older adults, individuals with disabilities, and low incomes.” This quote is explaining how actions will be taken by the department of transportation to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, by funding specific programs to fit their needs. Elaine Chao’s plan to increase mobility for disabled people is useful because it sheds light on the issue of funding and providing multiple ways of access to trains for people with disabilities. Also according to the department of transportation they state ” the government’s wide efforts to improve access and mobility for people with disabilities, can provide more efficient, affordable, and accessible vehicles and mobility services such as transit and ridesharing.” Therefore this quote is explaining how the government is finding ways to ensure that people who are disabled have equal access to transportation. I agree with the government’s efforts to make a change to accessibility because disabled people deserve a chance to be part of modern society.

Today people with disabilities have trouble accessing the trains, which prevents their quality of life. Christensen Keith Access to urban transportation system for individuals with disabilities explains how community integration is important for individuals with disabilities. He states ” It is essential that the built environment be supportive and provide access to the community resources, including housing, employment, transportation, and community service for all individuals.” This quote shows that when we make efforts to make a change in the environment that we live in, it benefits all individuals. As a result it is important to integrate individuals with disabilities, and individuals that are able to access transportation, to create a greater quality of life, and prevent social isolation.

There should be more accessible train stations for disabled people. MTA workers devise a plan for the years 2020 through 2024 to have more accessible train stations.  Martinez Jose MTA plan calls for more accessible subway stations, explains how the MTA is going to fix train stations that are not accessible for disabled people. He states ” The MTA pledge Monday to fast-track subway access for people with disabilities, by making 66 more stations easier to navigate as part of a new $51billion, five year spending plan”. This quote shows that the money that the MTA has is going towards creating a better way of traveling for people who have disabilities, and cannot access the subway stations at certain stops. I agree with the MTA’s plan to create more accessible stations, and I feel that it is important because everyone especially those who cannot walk, deserve a chance to get from place to place without limits and/or restrictions.

In conclusion it has become common today to dismiss the idea that trains are becoming less accessible for disabled individuals. The individuals that think in such ways often agree that lack of access to trains for disabled people have become more frequent, but suggest that efforts to improving their transportation conditions would simply be too costly and there are other alternatives to riding the trains that wouldn’t be so time consuming. My evidence clearly shows that the government has programs in place right now, and in the future, that will help fund the cost of mobility and accessibility for disabled individuals. When you look at a map of the New York City subway routes, that are accessible, you can see that in a lot of areas there are huge gaps in between train stops. Think about how easily it is for people who are able to walk , and who are able to hop on the subway. The service and conditions in the train cars may not always be the best but it isn’t a struggle for them to get on and off the trains, and get to where they need to go. Now think about someone who is disabled, and struggles to move around or get from place to place. Imagine what it is like for them to get on and off the train. Doesn’t everyone deserve a chance to go where they want without any issues?

Chapter 4- Three ways to respond ( YES, NO , OKAY BUT)

Don’t let your reader get confuse! There are three main ways to respond- always explain whether you agree, disagree or both.

Example- John claims that United States of America need a change in leadership because the leader has poor leadership skills.

Agreeing- i agree that United States need a change in leadership, a point that needs emphasizing since so many people still believe that he is a great leader.

Disagree- I disagree with John’s view because United States of America has a great leader who cares for his country.

Agree and Disagree simultaneously- Thought i concede that United States need a change in leadership, i still insist that he is a great leader with good intention.

Templates for agreeing- X is surely right about ____________ because, as she may not be aware, recent studies have shown that ________________.

Templates for disagreeing- I disagree with X’s view that ____________ because, as recent research has shown ________________________.

Templates for agreeing and disagreeing simultaneously-  X is right that _________________, but she seems on more dubious ground when she claims that _________________.

Chapter 2: The Art of Summarizing- Chapter Two is the focus of summarizing. Summaries should be shaped with your own twist, but also should address the main idea in a clear way. When summarizing what they say, use action verbs to explain what is going on. Be sure to be judgement free because your summary is based on someone else’s perspective.

Example: If you are writing a response to the essay by Zinczenko, you should see that the topic written about is a different type of essay summary that addresses the issue and solution, but in your perspective and judgement free.

In his article Don’t blame the eater, David Zinczenko blames the fast-food industry for fueling today’s so-called obesity epidemic, not only failing to provide adequate warning labels on it’s high-calorie foods, but also by filling the nutritional void in children’s lives left by their overtaxed working parents. With many parents working long hours and unable to supervise what their children eat, Zinczenko claims, children today are easily victimized by the low cost calorie-laden foods that fast-food chains are all too eager to supply”.

  1. Templates for introducing summaries and quotations:
  • X advocates…….
  • They celebrate the fact that…….

2. Verbs for introducing summaries and quotations:

Verbs for making a claim: argue, believe, claim, suggest, insist, emphasize

Verbs for expressing agreement: agree, support, admire, celebrate the fact that, endorse

Verbs for questioning or disagreeing: complain, complicate, question, reject, contradict

Verbs for making recommendations: demand, implore, urge, warn advocate, recommend

Chapter 3: The Art of Quoting- Chapter three is the Art of Quoting. Quoting exact words is the best way to launch an effective argument. When quoting you should put it in quote sandwich form. Be careful with quoting because you don’t want to quote it in the wrong way, and loose the reader.

Example: To frame a quotation, you need to insert it into a quote sandwich. The introduction and claim is the top slice of the bread, the quote is the middle, and the explanation is the bottom of the bread. The follow up statement should explain why you consider the quotation to be important and whether or not you agree with what is being said.

Tannen is alarmed by the culture of attack that she describes it would be more accurate to use language that reflects that alarm. Deborah Tannen a prominent linguistics professor, complains that academia is too combative. Rather than really listening to others, Tannen insists, academics habitually try to prove one another wrong. As Tannen herself puts it, “we  are all driven by our ideological assumptions that intellectual inquiry is a metaphorical battle, that the best way to demonstrate intellectual prowess is to criticize, find fault, and attack.” In short, Tannen objects that academic communication tends to be a competition for supremacy in which loftier values like truth and consensus get lost. Tannen’s observations ring true to me because I have often felt that the academic pieces I read for class are negative and focus on proving another theorist wrong rather than stating a truth.

 1.Templates for introducing quotations:

  • In making this comment, X urges us to……
  • X’s point is that………..
  • X is corroborating………

World almost out of Helium: Impacts of Helium

The topic on the table here is helium shortages in party stores worldwide, this map will show readers what cities are bound to suffer from helium shortages in which it will leave party stores to a limited amount of helium. When it comes to the topic of helium most of us readily agree that helium is considered to be a necessity used for many other resources other than filling party balloons. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how much of helium would we consider to be used for our necessities? Whereas some are convinced that our constant usage of helium is the main cause of this shortage. Others maintain that the pricing stock for helium is the leading cause of this shortage. Ultimately what is at stake here is with this shortage starting to affect the world, many people would go unemployed at jobs such as Party stores, Tire shops, and most importantly the hospitals that use this element to treat subjects who suffer from asthma and emphysema. Although helium is running short in America, Helium usage should be limited because pricing for helium will become expensive for the more we use it the more limited the source would be, this indicates that Helium is a limited source.

Even though Helium is one if not only, the biggest resource used for many of our necessities in our daily lives such as car tires, party balloons, medical and etc. Before revealing the reason why helium has become a limited source, we must establish the main necessities of helium first. Diane Dotson brings in two factors of how and why Helium is the most important element on earth. According to Diane Dotson in the article “ Everyday uses of Helium Gas “, https://sciencing.com/everyday-uses-helium-gas-8041697.html she claims “You can find helium used in everyday life in various forms. It is used as a lifting agent, in party balloons, in diving mixtures, and in optical fibers. Welders use helium for welding arcs in construction. Physicians and surgeons use helium to help patients with lung and heart procedures. When you visit a grocery store, and your groceries are scanned, you are likely observing helium-neon lasers.” We would all argue that “helium” as we identified it is an essential element for many resources. Henceforth brings us the many necessities used in the world and beyond.

Now that we have established what are the basic necessities for helium, I will now begin to discuss Why helium started to decrease in the United States and how we could be affected by this. In the article produced by CNBC, Huileng Tan advocates that the helium shortage would affect not only balloons but scientific research as well. According to Huileng, “Meanwhile, overall U.S. production has also fallen as the bureau has been rationing supply since February 2018 after a group of countries led by Saudi Arabia announced an economic embargo of Qatar. That created chaos in the helium supply chain for weeks as roughly 30 percent of the global supply was taken off the market.” https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/12/helium-shortage-is-hitting-balloons-and-scientific-research.htmlTan is surely right about how the U.S is having trouble with getting shipments of helium from Qatar because as she might not be aware, recent studies have shown that the United States is currently having trouble in Saudi Arabia with the murder of Khashoggi, at least 16 Saudi nationals were found guilty of this murder.

Finally how states would be affected in the future by this shortage including Party City stores shutting their doors to future workers. In the article “ Party City is facing a helium shortage…” by  David Goldman, he admits that Party city is indeed in danger of closing 45 stores due to this natural gas shortage, but the company hopes to continue receiving shoppers. According to Goldman “Filling balloons with helium is among the company’s most profitable services, according to Barclays’ Matt McClintock. Helium brings people into the store, and those customers usually buy other items instead of buying on Amazon (AMZN) or at another store. But with the earth’s (and Party City’s) helium supplies dwindling, potential balloon customers have been searching elsewhere for party goods.https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/10/business/party-city-helium/index.html This evidence shows that this element is the main reason why a lot of people go and buy balloons, but now that this element is dwindling less people would buy from this store and would go elsewhere to other party stores for better pricing on balloons.

http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67F-3q5VTzI

In conclusion, of course, many will probably disagree on the grounds that Helium should be a limited resource for necessities and should be mainly focused on hospitalizing the sick and curing asthma attacks. Moving forward this map would show the cities being affected by shortages in helium. Mainly my experience with helium had started when I was small and I went to a party city to pick up party supplies for a birthday party while walking in the store I saw first hand how balloons were inflated with helium. And my first thought of it was “ This is fascinating”.

Walk In My Shoes: Stop Stigmatizing The Homeless

Homeless Not Hopeless: Stop Stigmatizing The Homeless

Throughout the world, many societal concerns are often disregarded and neglected while the majority distract themselves with trivial things in life. One particularly ignored and increasing issue is homelessness and the services we provide or lack thereof to assist them. Homelessness is a problem that is prevalent in urban areas such as NYC and will only continue to progress as populations increase and the cost of living rises. Although there is a common misperception surrounding the homeless (such as homelessness being a product of personal choices), one isn’t truly aware of the circumstances beyond their control. Therefore, they should not be mistreated nor criminalized due to the effects they face of an unjust society. It is our responsibility to care for those in these unfortunate situations because without our contribution, life is brutal and much harder.

Homeless individuals have long been stigmatized and blamed for their situations without consideration nor sympathy. Many are quick to presume that the displaced are lazy, addicts, mentally unstable, and most commonly that it’s their fault they ended up where they are in life. According to the following multimedia source “We’re Not Trash:’ Homeless People Fight Stigma In Moving Video,” Goldberg states “We recently interviewed a number of homeless people to give them the chance to address the standard stereotypes passersby are quick to label them with, and dispelled each one” (Goldberg, Eleanor.“’We’re Not Trash:’ Homeless People Fight Stigma In Moving Video.” HuffPost, HuffPost, 2 Oct. 2015). The video focuses on several people who live on the streets who are strong and dedicated, and who defy false assumptions made about them. It elaborates on how homeless people are human beings as well despite these stereotypes, no different from you and I. In order to eliminate the misconceptions associated with homelessness, we should engage with the individuals in these unfortunate situations. Without this communication, it is difficult to understand someone’s context and as a result, easy to adhere to a stigma. (Video Down Below)

This shows the harsh and heartbreaking reality of the homeless. Many have become numb to the sight but yet are quick to make assumptions.

In addition to faulty stereotypes, the displaced also face many challenges both emotional and physical. There are numerous saddening stories of homeless people, including their experiences of being thrown out, struggling to get a job, struggling to obtain a meal, getting beaten and robbed, etc. The article “Eyes of the homeless reveal stories of heartache, hope,” by Jae Hong and Brian Melly, includes real experiences of those who are homeless, demonstrating the hardships and obstacles many have faced. When speaking about one of the homeless victims (Harris), Hong and Melly state, “Harris said he has had AIDS for 30 years. When medication stopped working, he got depressed and was evicted. Now he feels like an outcast, vulnerable and struggling to survive” (Hong, Jae, and Brian Melley. “Eyes of the Homeless Reveal Stories of Heartache, Hope.” AP NEWS, Associated Press, 7 Nov. 2017). The writers also include Harris’ own words stating “I’ve been beaten, robbed, chased… People steal your tents and your tarps and your clothes. I’ve lost everything I owned.” This provides insight on just a quarter of what so many experience and how devastating these effects have on a person, which is why judgment shouldn’t be passed on these individuals nor mistreatment.

As a result of stereotypes and unfortunate circumstance, many homeless people are unjustifiably criminalized, harassed, and mistreated. Based on the article “Building A Movement To End Homelessness,” the criminalization of homelessness refers to “measures that prohibit life-sustaining activities such as sleeping or camping, eating, sitting, and/or asking for money/resources in public spaces” (“Criminalization Of Homelessness.” National Coalition for the Homeless, National Coalition, 2019). The article further explains that many who are forced to carry out these life-sustaining activities in public spaces have been penalized despite the lack of adequate affordable housing and shelter space. Overall, these measures prove to be counterproductive to ending homelessness, not only does it violate their rights but adds to their difficult situations as well. From the petition “Stop Criminalizing Homelessness in New York City” the writer firmly states “It is not illegal to be poor. It is not illegal to be homeless. Those living in poverty and are homeless are trying to figure out where their next meal is coming from, dealing with stigma, and unfortunately laws and policies are making their situation even more difficult.” (Flannelly, Riyan. “Sign the Petition” Change.org, 2016,). Ultimately, the homeless should not be criminalized because every day is a battle, whether being misjudged or figuring out where to sleep, what to eat, etc. and to be picked on for that is demoralizing and inhumane.

Altogether, the homeless are no different from us, therefore shouldn’t be treated in any rude or discriminatory demeanor. Some people disagree with the mindset that the homeless are disruptive and should be held responsible for their actions as well as choices. Applying that perspective justifies passing judgment on individuals you don’t know or their situations which I don’t agree with. Regarding my personal life, a member of my family had become homeless, living out of his car as well as house hopping. Witnessing what was said about him and knowing otherwise was eye-opening as to how people are so quick to say something without knowing the facts. Overall, it is important to acknowledge and be mindful of the everyday struggles and suffering of the homeless because they don’t deserve to be stereotyped nor mistreated.

Those are the states that passed the law of abortion, some of them is legal and illegal. Abortion is still going on this country so this map help the people to understand how many states passed the law.

The topic of my map is about should abortion be legal, I will research the reasons and consequences of having an abortion. Many people assume that abortion can not cause a mental health because it helps the women to reduce a health issues such as infertility. If They are right about abortion should not be legal, then major consequences follow for the women’s who having an abortion instead of thinking the consequences. Although abortion may lead a serious problem, causes psychological damage. Beside abortion is not a solution for the women’s who is having it without thinking about the consequences. The Abortion also have two different method: abortion pills and surgical abortion.

Abortion can cause a serious problem because it increases the chance of getting a breast cancer by ProCon.org. (n.d.). Abortion. Retrieved, this article it explains how the abortion lead to a risk problem such as a cancer or health problem. According to this article it states”is significantly associated with an increased risk of breast cancer” and that “the risk of breast cancer increases as the number of [abortions] increases.” (con 16). This explains how the health problem impact the women because the increase of getting an abortion that is the cause of getting a problem the rest of their life. I agree with this article is the best to know the causes and effects about abortion before making a decision. So they need to know what is abortion and consequences, the women who having the abortion might not know the effects they just taking their action. Another textual source by Harriet Pilpel (The Right of Abortion), she explained why the abortion made illegal because the hospital was not taking their responsibility to save the mother life. According to Pilpel where she states”Abortions were made illegal for this reason except where they were necessary to save the life of the mother; that is, where the great risk of infection which every operation involved was outweighed by the risk of carrying that particular pregnancy to term”. This means that the hospitals was increasing the risk for the mother lives because they were not using their power or responsibility to save lives during abortion. I agree with her because losing the women’s lives during abortion can impact the society and the mother will take action for it.

Abortion can also increase the risk of depression by ProCon.org. (n.d.). Abortion. Retrieved said in the article how they got the risk of depression because they do not want to go through the pain of abortion or lose their live. According to the article it states “American women found that women who aborted were 154% more likely to commit suicide than women who carried to term” (con 6). This shows how the women who committed suicide because of the consequences of getting an abortion they are many risk of getting it. In addition the abortion should not be legal because some women may lose their lives and increase the risk of depression.

This picture connect to my claim because a lot of women can have a depression after abortion because they might lose their lives or increase the risk of depression. Abortion impact the women live in society.

Some people argue that abortion should be legal because it will not increase a health problem when the hospitals are using the safety method by Harriet Pilpel (The Right of Abortion) on her article she explained why the abortion should be legal because it will protect the women health especially when they got rape or using the birth control. The states using their power to make abortion safe from not losing the lives of the women who is getting the abortion. According to Pilpel she states”Seven states—Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, New Mexico, and North Carolina—have amended their laws to permit abortion not only to save life but also to protect the health, mental and physical, of the mother, in cases of rape and incest, and to avert the birth of defective offspring (Governor Reagan forced the omission of this ground in the California law)”. This is important when the lawn permit the abortion because it will help the women or the teenage from not losing their life. Sometimes when they got pregnant the hospitals can recommended them to get an abortion because it’s not safe for them to continue the pregnant and it also help them from not getting the risk.

This picture can also connect to my claim because they are a method that that will not impact the women future pregnancies. Abortion pill safe and effective for getting the abortion and can also save their lives or getting a risk when the states pass their law to get an abortion safety.

In conclusion, abortion has been labeled as a social problem in the United States and all over the world. This only puts the mother’s life at risk and danger. Many factors such as weakening of the world economy and the consequences of the hard life as caused women to make such a critical decision. Ive witnessed my cousin who went through to the process of having abortion she almost lose her life, she had many regrets and was going through a phase of depression. Since then she decided of not having an abortion in her life, the consequences of abortion impacts the mother’s lives also the society.

Although plastic is used to sustain human life, plastic is doing more harm than good. In other words plastic pollution should be limited. My map  shows that there is a stream of plastic that passes through the bronx. My map is an alternative of NYC showing the contaminated water passing through the bronx. I did the research on the  bronx coast lines to inform about the dangers of plastic. In other words, millions of plastic bags are used daily in the bronx. My map alerts the viewer on the hazardous plastic polluted areas. The problem is many  people lack an understanding of the topic. Another problem people are unwilling to take action. The objective behind the map is to inform the viewer. The second Objective is to persuade the viewer to take action. The map “Trash in the City” by Rebecca Solnit  the author made a great map on pollution. but not specifically on plastic waste , This map inspired me to conduct my own research on plastic waste. The author did good at identifying the pollution in the city, but didn’t explain the different types of trash being exposed. I believe it’s important to know the difference of trash and how some have more harm than the others. I  observed the different plastic in the water and how it affects our environment.

Although many people believe that plastic pollution is caused by people’s lack of care of discipline, but it is mainly because of the lack of recycling centers in the bronx. Therefore , Plastic pollution continues to  damage our ecosystem. For example, in the article “Progress of recycling in the built environment” the author Enric Vasquez explains how plastic pollution contributes to global warming. For instance , in the article it states “Plastic waste release greenhouse gasses into the air similar to burning fossil fuels”[Vasquez page 76 line 7].The quote from the article “progress of recycling in the built environment” supports the claim that plastic pollution damages our ecosystem because it explains how plastic waste has  harmful material that contributes to global warming. Another example is a video on youtube called “ A radical

way to end plastic waste” by Andrew Forrest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5g9-4fx60A the speaker states “All plastics are building blocks from oil and gas”.To sum up this relates to my map because it shows the result of plastic pollution in the bronx, and that Plastic pollution should be limited because it makes our streets dirty and damages our ecosystem.

On the other hand, plastic pollution is giving the bronx a bad reputation. For example, many people who don’t live in the bronx see the bronx as a junk yard compared to the other boroughs in ny. For example, in the text “Plastic pollution purge” by Kate smith the author explains how the bronx is one of the main attractions for dirt accumulation. For example in the text  it states “some areas of the Bronx where the sidewalks are not maintained by the building owners, and the result of this is dog urine smells, and dog crap all over the place along with garbage that are not picked up [Smith line 15 paragraph 4].The quote from the text supports that the bronx has a bad reputation because it explains how the bronx has historically been known as a dirty place for years. To add on, this contributes to plastic pollution because many people  assume that the bronx is dirty so they don’t care to keep things clean. To sum up, this contributes to the development of my map, because it shows how the bronx is that bad reputation.

In fact, on a broader scale plastic pollution kills sea animals. In the article “killing of marine life: plastic garbage  polluted area” by Paul Watson, the author explains how plastic kills many sea animals. For example in the text it states “entanglement and accidental consumption of marine debris is common for many animals including seals, dolphins, sharks, etc” [watson line 34].The quote from the text supports the claim that plastic pollution is harmful for animals because it states how the sea creatures are getting killed by plastic pollution. In other words this relates to my map because the sea animals contribute to the balance of our ecosystem so if they die off we can be next.

Above all plastic pollution gives the bronx a bad reputation. For example, many bronxites don’t like the beaches in the bronx because it’s polluted with plastic waste . One reason bronx For example, in the article “Project waste” by Jane Black, Black explains the things that are left on  orchard beach. One example is line 10 second paragraph it states “91% of trash collected from the bronx beach is styrofoam and plastic” [Black line 10].The quote from the text explains how the bronx has a bad reputation from plastic pollution because it shows stats on plastic pollution on orchard beach. To conclude, plastic pollution gives the bronx reputation because the dirty ascuations on the bronx is true.

In conclusion, Although there are a lot of problems in the world, plastic waste can be fixed in the bronx by opening up more recycle centers. For instance , a video on youtube called “The surprising solution to ocean plastic” by David Katzhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT4Qbp89nIQ it states “People in Haiti are able to make a living off of collecting plastic in their  neighborhoods. In other words, if haiti people can keep their area clean by making a profit, this will have to be the same motive for people in the bronx. To add on, my map how there is less recycling centers in the bronx compared to how much plastic waste surrounds the bronx. To sum up ,  if we alert the bronx borough president we can help change our community. To finalize plastic pollution needs to be limited for the sake of our health, sea animals, and the world.

This site is credible because it has a more up to date outlook  on the topic. For example, this source has a lot of scientific information that the other sources don’t present. The reviews on google states it is purposeful and intetiful, that slow down over consumption and allow us to be conscious with the environment.

The site is credible because the information is comprehensive  and up to date, even though the reviews on google are terrible but i like the valid information that it presents.
