Mental health Crisis Center

Mental health Crisis Center

The part that I going to indicate in this essay will be Burnside and Jerome in Bronx NY. In the first map I will indicate the place where they should create the Mental health crisis center in this area and in the second map a will indicate the place where it is located the only hospital that provides help for these people in this area.

This map shows where should be built a mental health crisis center. This place it is a large and every year has built a different types of shops and before the year end they close it.

This map shows where it is located the hospital that offers help for people with mental health problem.

Benjamin, Mueller. “Public Hospitals Treat Greater Share of Mental Health Patients”. New York Times, Aug. 22, 2017. The report, providing a fresh look at a longstanding issue, points to the slow churn of change in mental health care. Although widespread agreement that many patients are better treated and treated at lower costs outside the hospital, serious alternatives to psychiatric wards remain few and far between. The city’s public hospitals system, the NYC Health & Hospitals, said inpatient mental health stays have declined since 2014. And New York State is in the third year of a $7 billion Medicaid reform plan that encourages hospitals to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations, especially for mental illness, by instead investing in helping people manage their medications outside the hospital and integrating psychiatric care with other doctor visits. Therefore, I pointed this area of the Bronx because is one of the areas that urgently needs this kind of help. Although, in some place the problem is still because this is not enough to attend to many patients. When we are walk down of many street of New York, we can see people sleeping in the street covering with cardboard, asking for some coins and walking desolately. If the government does not provide enough help for these people they will continue to find solution of their mental and emotional problems in drugs and then it will be more problems for patients and the society. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/22/nyregion/new-york-mental-health-hospitals.html

Caroline, Lewis. “When New Yorkers Report A Mental Health Crisis, who should respond?”. New York Public radio, Sept. 19, 2019. Local headlines in recent years have highlighted how a 911 call for assistance with someone who has symptoms of a mental illness can end in a tragedy. In New York City, at least 14 people with mental illness have been killed by New York police officers in the last three years. Although, the police are for help and protect all citizens, people with mental health crisis are at risk when they come to the rescue in a crisis. This is because the police are the ones who arrive at the moment that they are having a crisis. Police see person with crisi  as a threat for them and those who are over and if they need to act with aggression to reassure them they will doing it. These people need special help for their problems not the police. For that reason, it is necessary that the government add more economic funds to be able to hire more social workers who can be there at the moment they have these type of crisis even if the police are present there is professionals which are prepared to control situation like this in the proper way.https://gothamist.com/news/when-new-yorkers-report-mental-health-crisis-who-should-respond

Therefore, I strongly believe that, the government tries to show that he gives help to these people but we can see this help it is not enough for them. Unfortunately, many of these people when have a crisis who are going to help them is the police which the solution can end in tragedy. Also, we can notice how these people are on the streets depressive with drug and alcohol problems. It is not fair for a human being to end up his/her life with a critical or serious condition like this just because the government does not want to provide the necessary attention and help to them.

After school program

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

My map is going to be about kids walking around school but at the same time looking confuse and loss. It’s important because sometimes we see school and school close to each other and we also see after school programs and yet we have some much kids failing in one of the subject. Although after school is expensive program, student who participate in it are getting better grades and doing better in life. The map will showing the parts in the Bronx near the schools where you can see kids walking around.

After school program by Asil Ali Ozdogru and Judy Hartley, the need of after school program was influenced by the change on the workforce, education and family structure. Decreasing rates of kids getting into trouble and increasing the rate of education and better life. All this changed started at the end of the 19th century when kids instead of going to the factories they started to going to the schools. This implementation was passed by congress in the 1990.
FOUNDING still is an issue now days. “Federal and state funding for after- school programs continue to shrink, as do foundation grants and local funds.” Meaning sources where kids can get after school for free and parent can be at work in peace, are getting hard to get, one of the reason why we see after school program are getting expensive and parent can’t afford to pay for it. Asil Ali Ozdogru and Judy Hartley shows and example of how much after school program received between the years of 2002 and 2007 and 2009. “from high-poverty and low-performing schools. Even though funding for 21CCLCs was reduced between 2002 and 2007, the annual funding has remained around $1 billion since 2008. The overall annual funding that can be used for after-school programs, including CCDF, ESEA, and 21CCLCs, reaches over $13 billion. Furthermore, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provided $4.35 billion for the Race to the Top grant over the four years for states to implement educational improvement strategies, including after-school programming.” This average is in the united stated, now in the Bronx there is more than 100 after school programs, some of them are expensive and parents can’t afford it.

Elaine Clanton Harpine says one of the major causes of academic failure is aggression, bulling and violence. We see that a lot in school, where kids abuse others kids and sometimes teachers don’t do anything about it. Also after school programs can help to educate the kids and some can help reduce the amount of student drooping school do to this issue. After school programs help student to graduate on time. Harpine also explain that usually after school program only help with the homework and recreational activities.

In conclusion, after school programs are very helpful in a student life in one way or other. Young people like me that came or are coming to this country in which is a different language than our first language after school program are helpful. I am one of those students that by going to after school were able to graduate. After school really help me with my English. After school programs provide organized and supervised activities for children. After school program in the Bronx emerged because of the historical change that can occur in our community.

Diabetes: A Rising Epidemic in The Bronx

Lesly Mejia
ENG 110 216B
Professor Krystyna Michael
September 10, 2019

Growing up, I heard a lot about diabetes. Not only was I diagnosed with type one diabetes, but I also have many relatives who also have diabetes. When I was smaller I thought diabetes was an uncommon disease. But as the years have passed by, I now hear it constantly in the news, and I meet more people being diagnosed with diabetes as if it was a very common thing to have. Diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to control your glucose levels (blood sugar), this could either result because of genetics or it can be caused by one owns actions like having an unhealthy eating habit and being overweight. This disease has become very common now a days, which is very worrisome as well because this can be a very popular reason for deaths. Especially in the Bronx. You’d be surprised how easy it is to find someone who is diagnosed with diabetes. Why wouldn’t it be easy , when you can find a fast food restaurant at almost every block in the Bronx. Although there are many factors that may lead to the diagnosis of diabetes, fast food places is a reason why the rates of diabetes in the Bronx is rapidly increasing and should be limited.

Diabetes is a disease in which your pancreas does not develop enough insulin for your body. As a result, this causes for your glucose, blood sugar, to be higher than what it normally should be. Which is why people with diabetes must constantly keep track of their carbs, the amount of sugars in their food and the times they check their blood sugar and how much insulin they need to provide themselves with. Although genetics is one of the factors that can lead to the diagnosis of diabetes, there are many other factors that can cause diabetes and there are many versions of diabetes that one can be diagnosed with. Additionally, there are three types of diabetes that someone can be diagnosed with. According to the article, “What Are the Different Types of Diabetes?”, by Ann Pietrangelo, there’s type 1 diabetes, which “is believed to be an autoimmune condition. This means your immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the beta cells in your pancreas that produce insulin. The damage is permanent.” There’s also type 2 diabetes, which “starts as insulin resistance. This means your body can’t use insulin efficiently. That stimulates your pancreas to produce more insulin until it can no longer keep up with demand. Insulin production decreases, which leads to high blood sugar.” And lastly there is gestational diabetes, which happens “due to insulin-blocking hormones produced during pregnancy. This type of diabetes occurs only during pregnancy.” There are also many causes of diabetes. In the article, “What Are the Causes of Diabetes?”by Vanessa Caceres, it states that the reason someone can have type 1 diabetes is because of their genetics but there can also be “an additional environmental factor may trigger an immune response that ultimately causes destruction of the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas”. Vanessa Caceres also states that type 2 diabetes is caused by a complicated interaction of genes and the environment. Gestational diabetes develops only during pregnancy and can affect the babies health. According to the article, “What Are the Different Types of Diabetes?”, it states, “About 30.3 million people in the United States have diabetes. About 5 to 10 percent have type 1 diabetes, while 90 to 95 percent have type 2 diabetes.” With rates this high, this shows that diabetes is a disease that can be considered as an epidemic which makes us think that there must be factors that are almost inevitable , but what is the rate of diabetes in the Bronx alone?

The Bronx is a culturally diverse borough, which means there’s all types of races and all types of food that you can eat. In fact, there shouldn’t be a reason you can’t find a place to eat in the Bronx because there will always be a restaurant or at least a fast food place you can order from in each block. But this could also mean that the Bronx is prone to have a large amount of people who are overweight or are diagnosed with diabetes. According to the article, “Diabetes in the Bronx: epicenter of an epidemic”, by James Palmer, it states, “The Bronx and New York City are positioned at the perilous front of the country’s escalating diabetes epidemic. According to a recent survey published by the New York City Department of Health, one in every three people in the borough suffers from diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the number of Americans with the disease has climbed to 25.8 million — 8.3 percent of the population. That is still lower than the rate of the disease in the city at 10.5 percent”. It has been proven that The Bronx and New York City have been ranked to be one of the places in the country to have the highest rates of diabetes. But why does the Bronx have one of the highest rates of diabetes in the country? According to, “Diabetes in the Bronx: epicenter of an epidemic”, it states, “Diabetes is most prevalent among minority and low-income populations. To make matters worse, these people often have limited access to adequate health care. According to the city health department, diabetes is most prevalent among Hispanics and blacks, followed closely by Asians”. Additionally, according to the article “Five of The Worst Neighborhoods For Diabetes Are In The Bronx” written by Jennifer H. Cunningham From the Daily News, she explains that out of all the neighborhoods with the highest rate, Bronx has the most rates of death toll because of diabetes. Brownsville in Brooklyn is the highest with a death toll of 177 per 100,000 residents, followed by Mott Haven with 159 per 100,000. Next is East Tremont, with 134 deaths per 100,000, Highbridge with 131, Morisania with 130, and Hunts point with 117. This shows that diabetes is mostly popular among people who have low income, which is no surprise since the Bronx is considered to be one of the poorest boroughs of New York City and because of the poor income and not being able to afford having diabetes it ends up being a tragic death. Ultimately, this also shows that since the people in the Bronx have the lowest income in the city, they are also likely to buy food that is less expensive, which results in them buying cheaper unhealthy food, the fresh healthy food since it is in fact more costly to buy vegetables than it is to buy fast food.

If you live in New York, or more specifically in the Bronx, you know that the Bronx is filled with lots of culture and lots of diverse races and ethnicities. As a result of that there is a lot of diverse types of food you can order. There’s mexican restaurants, dominican restaurants, chinese restaurants, but there’s also the cheapest and the most popular of them all, fast food restaurants like McDonalds, Popeyes, Burger King and the list goes on. According to a video called “Fast Food, Fat Profits: Obesity in America” by a channel named Fault Lines, that in order for all these fast food restaurants to have all these foods available, they pay a large amount of farmers to grow a mass amounts of meat. At the same time portion sizes go up as well. This means that as a result of portion sizes going up, the amount of numbers of obesity and diabetes went up as well. Many people would say, “its their choice, they also have the choice to buy vegetables and eat healthy food as well”, but how is it possible in a borough that’s known to be the poorest of the whole city and on top of that the prices of healthy food in vegetables are very high. According to a data set of fruit and vegetable prices, provided by the “United States Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service”, the average retail price of fresh apples is $1.62 per pound, meanwhile you can get a large cup of soda at McDonald’s costs $1.00, or a large size fries for $1.00. The average price of fresh collard greens per pound is $2.63, meanwhile you can get 20 piece chicken nuggets for $4, which seems like a much better deal than paying $2.63 for one pound of collard greens which probably won’t suffice your hunger. Could you imagine paying about $20 get the ingredients you need to make a bowl of salad when you can simply get buttermilk crispy sandwich for $4.99. When you’re in an unstable financial state, you don’t have much choice of what to eat. The important thing is that you get to eat, no matter if it’s healthy or unhealthy. So of course, it’s not a surprise that the rates of diabetes are that high when corporations that make up the prices for vegetables and healthy food are putting them high, inevitably making the person have no choice but to buy what’s more affordable which is fast food.

* These data entires from the United States Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service shows the average retail prices of apples and collard greens in varied forms.

The significance of my map is to show the neighborhoods in New York with the highest rates of diabetes and the neighborhoods with the lowest prevalence of New York. In my map the maps with the highest prevalence are mostly neighborhoods in the Bronx which is known to be the most poorest borough of New York. In the map, we can also see that the neighborhoods with the highest prevalence are mostly populated by hispanic and black people. The neighborhoods with the lowest prevalence are mostly in Manhattan are mainly populated by white and asain people. The topic of diabetes is something in which I connect to because I am actually diagnosed with diabetes, however I was genetically born with it, meaning I didn’t have a choice and I didn’t have the opportunity to try to avoid having diabetes. It is scary that diabetes has been a very common disease and it is also one of the main reasons of deaths. We do have ways in which we can have a much better lifestyle. But at the same time corporations seem to care more about how much money they make, rather than our health.

Global warming : Should we be concerned about who gets effected by climate change

This is a female in nigeria getting food for the people who survived this disaster in 2012

A girl carries smoked fish at Makoko shanty town in Lagos on August 30, 2012. Hundreds of residents of Makoko waterfront recently marched to government house to protest the demolition of their shanties while refuting allegations that the community harboured criminals. The high cost of living and the massive urbanization of Lagos, the largest city and the economic capital of Nigeria, has engineered a migration of residents mostly middle class and the poor to neighbouring towns in Ogun State, both in southwest part of the country in search of cheap accommodations. Estate developers are quick in exploiting the high cost and scarcity of accommodation leading to emerging new towns, modern estates to accommodate the spillover in Lagos. Global warming

My topic is Global warming, throughout time the average global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded history. And experts see the trend is accelerating, all but one of the 16 hottest years in NASA’s 134 year record have occurred since 2000. Some may not know but the most vulnerable people affected by global warming are small islands, that is why I want to focus my map on Haiti and Nigeria. I believe we should be helping them out the most because they get exposed to the direct impacts of climate change the most. Recent studies like these shed new light on global warming, which previous studies had not addressed. People living in small islands are affected the most, Although every country in every continent is affected by global warming we should be investing in creating an emergency system to prevent these people from going into poverty.

According to the article “The Climate Crisis Is Global, but These 6 Places Face The Most Severe Consequences” by Tara Law Lagos, Nigeria is at extreme risk on maplecroft’s climate change vulnerability index. This is an issue because the population is increasing rapidly and its considered to be a major economic engine for the region. They also mention that climate change could threaten the city’s economy. The city is especially vulnerable because its located on the Gulf of Guinea, says levin. As sea levels rise, its likely to affect cause coastal erosion and contaminate potable water. This could harm local agriculture in the countryside and damage the country’s fishing industry, which could be dire in a country with tremendous poverty. Haiti is another place affected, the island nation is located in the “Atlantic Hurricane basin”, which means that it is vulnerable to hurricanes. In comparison to other projections on climate change, scientists are less certain about the link between climate change and hurricane frequency and intensity, but studies have suggested that hurricanes are likely getting wetter and more intense due to climate change.

Around the world people are experiencing both the subtle and stark effects of climate change. Gradually shifting weather patterns, rising sea levels and more extreme weather events are all clear and devastating. What causes global warming? This is how it works, it occurs when carbon dioxide and other air pollutants and greenhouse gases collect in the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation that have bounced off the earth’s surface. normally , this radiation would escape into space but these pollutants, which can last for years to centuries in the atmosphere, trap the heat and cause the planet to get hotter thats whats known as the greenhouse effect. Basically they are saying that  According to “ How climate change affects people living in poverty” climate change threatens the cleanliness of our air, depletes our water sources and limits food supply. It disrupts livelihoods, forces families from their homes and pushes people into poverty. During my research I came across another article called “how climate change is affecting our lives” I found out that yes we’ve known for decades about the damage all that extra heat is doing to the earth but humans keep doing things that affect the air we breathe, now a recent UN backed report on climate change highlights just how dangerous that process has been.

There are 3 ways that climate change is already affecting people’s lives, they are health, homes, and food. These are the 3 main things we need to survive, that’s why I believe we should be creating a system for places that are most affected by global warming. For health the problem is that the same dirty fossil fuel emissions that contribute to the greenhouse effect can lead to respiratory diseases such as asthma in children and adults. As far as homes for coastal communities, sea level rise could lead to an unwanted move. According to “ Here are three ways that climate change is already affecting peoples lives” as our globe warms, glaciers melt and ocean water expands, leading seas to rise about 7 to 8 inches on average since 1900 about 3 inches of that since 1993. The added volume of water creeping up coastlines slowly swallows land and homes and fuels more flooding inland. For food the probelm is that the same water accumalating in out atmosphere thanks to fossil fuels is actually changing the composition of fruits and vegetables that we eat, making them less nutritious. If we dont create some type of emergency system for these places, between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to kill an additional 250,000 people each year, from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea and heat stress, while continuing to jeopardize clean air, safe drinking water and sufficient food supply.

In conclusion according to “ preparing communities for worsening disasters” natural disasters are growing more frequent and more severe, threatening the lives of the worlds most vulnerable people and the infrastructure they depend on. They have already started by investing in and initiating disaster mitigation tactics. In tajikistan, they reinforced river embankments to slow the effects of flooding. In indonesia, they are addressing the growing challenge of urban flooding, which climate change is making worse, by helping people identify when flooding might occur, developing early warning systems and establishing evacuation routes. We should also keep in mind that these warnings have to be taken serious some governors or presidents would see these types of warnings but wont take action just because they don’t want to spend all that time and money on evacuating and preparing these places because it might not be so serious but they don’t know that they should leave that up to people who know about the weather and when these disasters will occur.

Tourism In New York City: A Perfect Place For Sightseeing

Most Popular Tourist Attractions In New York City

Many people assume that New York City is a city where everyone spends days and days working non-stop. This is due to the large number of offices of global companies that are in this city. However, the truth is that New York City is more than just a city where you work 24 hours a day. At first glance it may seem that way, but if you stop to observe the historical places, the large number of museums, beautiful parks and the great diversity of people that you can find in this city, you will find that New York City is the perfect place for any type of tourism. Although sightseeing in New York City can be somewhat overwhelming due to the large number of people who travel its streets day after day, it is worth going out to know all the great places that this city can offer because it holds many historical figures, there are many activities to do, and it is very diverse.

A relevant point when doing tourism in New York City is to know that this is a city with many historical places. A person who is touring in New York can draw on the great history from the streets and buildings of this wonderful city has. Places like The Brooklyn Bridge, what is “the first steel wire suspension bridge; at one point the largest in the world; inspiration for Hart Crane’s poem, The Bridge.”(2), or Central Park, that is”the Green Lung of the city; one of the most visited city parks in the world; designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.”(3) are perfect examples of the places the people who are doing tourism in New York City should visit and learn more about the history of this amazing city.

Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge

Last but not least, one of the advantages of sightseeing in New York City is that there are all kinds of activities for all types of people. Even if you are doing tourism alone or with your family, there are activities that suit everyone’s taste. If you are a person who likes to have fun and learn something new every day, you should visit Time Square, which is “a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, entertainment center and neighborhood in the Midtown Manhattan section of New York City at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue.”(4). On the other hand, If you are a family person, New York offers you a great variety of parks and restaurants where you can spend a good time with your loved ones. In general what this indicates is that New York is the perfect destination for a good holiday, whether you go alone or in the company of your family.

Bearing in mind my previous point, living in a place like New York City can be overwhelming due to the fact that this is a small city where more than 8.6 million people live. For a tourist, this is not a problem because this will just be in this city for a short time, but this can be overwhelming because you will be surrounded by people at all times. According to Joe Guzzardi “ Basic math proves the point. NYC has about 8.6 million residents distributed over 302 square miles which makes it the nation’s most densely populated major city with more than twice the population of the second largest city, Los Angeles. As well, 38 of the nation’s 50 states each have less population than NYC. Since 2010, New York’s population has increased an unsustainable 5.5 percent.” (1). A tourist who decides to go to New York to spend their vacations will have to deal with this many people. However, that should not prevent you from enjoying your trips to one of the main cities in the world. If there was a capital of the melting pot that the USA is considered to be, it would be New York City. By being so populated it also holds place for people from very different backgrounds. Visiting this diverse city can enrich someone with knowledge about many different cultures.

This is a short guide of the places that everybody should go in New York City.

New York City is undoubtedly a wonderful city. It is rich in history, culture, and activities. This city should be on everyone’s bucket list. Its high population could discourage some people from coming but it should be kept in mind that one could take advantage of this. The Brooklyn Bridge and Times Square are few of the historical spots that could enhance the New York City experience. New York City is a place that must be explored and experienced.

Organic Food: Can Save Your Life

In this map I am pointing out the few supermarkets that are in the area of The Bronx of Organic food.

People say the world revolves around money; I beg to differ. The world revolves around food. We consume it all the time and without it we cannot live, food is a huge part of us. The moment it touches our mouths; our bodies start appropriating it. Food digests into very small particles that end up being determining factors in certain actions of our bodies. It is so important that it could determine our health. In cities like New York, more specifically in the borough of The Bronx, eating habits are not the healthiest. Introducing organic food to The Bronx could help resolve many issues. Although organic food can be expensive, it should be consumed because it is better for the environment, it could improve people’s health, and create a healthier lifestyle.

It is important to define that organic food is “the product of a farming system which avoids the use of man-made fertilizers.”(Lewin) Fertilizers contain chemicals like phosphorous that are very dangerous to the environment. The use of these chemicals can lead to an excess of nutrients and leads to the lack of oxygen for animals and plants; this is known as eutrophication. “Eutrophication is characterized by excessive plant and algal growth due to the increased availability of one or more limiting growth factors needed for photosynthesis (Schindler 2006), such as sunlight, carbon dioxide, and nutrient fertilizers”.(qtd, Chislock) The production of organic food itself takes care of our ecosystem at the same time it takes care of those who consume it.

In The Bronx, organic food could be hard to access. As shown in the map supermarkets exclusively for organic foods are far apart and there are not many of them. It is important to introduce that 1 out of 3 people in The Bronx suffer from diabetes and that these supermarkets could provide food alternatives that would not add the current health issue. If the importance of these foods were advertised by these same supermarkets perhaps more people would do the extra effort of reaching them and making changes in their eating habits that would improve their health. After all, though the supermarkets are far, the transportation system in The Bronx could facilitate their access and this is yet another thing these supermarkets should stress. In “What Does ‘organic’ Mean, and Should You Buy Organic Foods?” (youtube) it is explained how these organic foods go through a series of regulations that requires these foods to go through little to none chemical alterations. Moving away from these chemicals does not only sound more attractive so people go more towards purchasing them than junk food, but when consumed, our bodies react better than if they were not organic.

Our lifestyle is defined by what we feed our minds and stomachs. The common Bronx lifestyle consists of full-time jobs or school in order to pay rent. Mostly, these occupations take up most of the citizen’s of the Bronx day making it hard to pay attention to their nutrition. Once informed about the benefits of organic food it is hard to shake the thought that a few more free hours are better than using the time to prepare your own meals. Organic food is bought raw forcing consumers to prepare their meals. Inorganic foods are more attractive due to the fact that they tend to already be prepared and are more readily available to consumers. Organic food can even go as far as motivating someone to cultivate their own food. It helps us better our habits.

Organic food is underestimated. The Bronx’s population is not very informed about its benefits. Organic food at first thought is known to be good to our bodies but it even goes beyond that. Organic food is also crucial for the improvement of our ecosystem’s health. Organic food forces us to create a healthier lifestyle for ourselves. Organic food is an overall well-rounded solution for many of the Bronx’s current issues.

ASTHMA: Unhealthy Air

Asthma is a common lung disorder in which inflammation cause the bronchi to swell and narrow the airways. It causes breathing difficulties that may range from mid to life-threating. Some of the symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, and chest tightness. Asthma can be treated with a  inhalers or a nebulizer machine. Although some people might say asthma can be genetic but it also shows that air pollution play a big part, air pollution triggers your asthma symptoms especially if you live in the city. Therefore by checking the air quality it will help to show where is the highest rate of air pollution.

It’s a proving fact that asthma can be inherited if both parent have it or maybe a close relative. Jenna Fletcher argue that genetic plays a big part whether or not a person develop the condition. In making this comment, according to a 2014 review study, genetic factors account for around 70 percent of a person’s risk of developing asthma”.( Fletcher.“ Does asthma run in the family?”. Medicalnewstoday.com, 14 February 2019) I agree with her research study because when I was younger I had asthma, my nephew who is 7 years old haves asthma too and according to my mom it ruins in her side of the family because also her mother develop asthma. Besides asthma being genetic, pollution can trigger your asthma.

When you live in a big city you might not notice but because there’s a lot of factories and cars that can make the air unhealthy. It can totally affect your health or if you a person with asthma it can trigger it. The medical review claim ozone, a gas, is one of the most common air pollutants. Medical review point is “ ozone contributes to what we typically experience as “smog” or haze.it is most common in cities where there are more cars”(Medical review.” Air Pollution “. aafa.org, October2015 )  This explain cars can effect the air but also factories anything that is experience as a smog. The medical review writes “ small particles in the air can pass through your nose or mouth and get into your lungs. Airborne particles, found in haze, smoke and airborne dust”( Medical review.” Air Pollution “.aafa.org, October2015) This shows people with asthma are at great risk from inhaling the small particles. As a result by reporting the air quality will help you know when it might trigger an asthma episode.

Air pollution remains as an environmental health threat to all New Yorkers. The reason for it because we have a lot of factories and cars, trucks & so on goes the list. According to an article I found it says we experience poor air quality due to a high level of particles. In the article it state, “exposure to PM2.5 can worsen serious health problem, including heart and lung diseases.” (1.nyc.gov) This statement agrees to my whole essay because as I said before a particles goes in your body it trigger your asthma causing breathing difficulty in your lungs. “During the summer, warm weather and strong sunshine can lead to high levels of ground-level ozone”, claims the article. (1.nyc.gov) This is a smog that can trigger coughing and throat irritation. Therefore if you or maybe anybody you know will like to limit exposures to air pollution, there a lot of media such as the news, the website air now or even sign up for alerts from notify NYC which provide daily update of the air quality.

Some people might think that maybe air pollution doesn’t trigger your asthma but they wrong because there is many proven fact that it play an important part towards your health. Also in my map shows the different air quality index level and it explain it self where the air is good or when is really bad which is the orange/red parts on the map.In the map it shows that in the night the air quality is most likely to be low because unlike the morning not so many people driving around or working. For example I notice around hunts point there is nothing but a lot of factories, a lot truck passing by to get to these factories you can notice the smog. As a result you can just imagine how unhealthy the air can be.

Breast Cancer

              Breast cancer

The thought of having breast cancer is frightening to every women, and devastating to some. However, ignoring the possibility that you may get breast cancer, or avoiding the things you should do to detect and avoid cancer, can be even more dangerous. My map will show the prevalence of breast cancer in NYC.

This map will be useful In my research by showing the high rate of breast cancer in NYC.

Image result for breast cancer map in NYc'

Many people assume that breast cancer is a devastating disease that may affect one out of nine women in the New York City. This year alone , a patient will be diagnosed every three minutes and a women will die from breast cancer every thirteen minutes.

E.A. Graham, University of Texas Cancer center www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov written in 2004 April 17 states that “ As breast cancer survivors often say that lymph-edema is more than just as swollen arm ” This shows that breast cancer can even cut your  arm.Unfortunately, there is still little known about the disease cause or cure currently the only means of survival is early detection by annual breast exam and education about  the disease.

www.reseachgate.net doctor Sylvie Polio written in 2019 it show that “a mammogram is the most reliable way to find breast cancer as early as possible”. This means that  by the time a lump can be felt in a women’s breast, it’s is usually bigger than the size of cancers that can be found with a mammogram. About twenty five percent of breast cancer are found through monthly surgeries exams and thirty five percent are found through mammograms. This is helpful to me because it’s showing that they rate cancers discovered increases to nearby forty percent when physical exam and mammograms are used. Women are argued  to do both.

Educating women about breast cancer has become increasingly important. Recently an alarming survey conducted by www.america.cancer shows that many women have incorrect perceptions about their risk of getting breast cancer. Nearly half of the the women believe their chances of developing cancer were as much as fifty percent when in women thought that their risk of getting breast cancer was higher in their thirties and fourths when in fact the risk increase with age in many ways talking about the risk factors for breast cancer is a bit misleading and can give many women a false sense of security video YouTube new debate over breast cancer treatment due November 3 2018 shows how of the cases of breast cancer diagnosed every year 70% of the patients have more of the risk factors. This is important because it helps to understand what are the real risk factors and how they affect the chances of developing breast cancer. Most people argue that some of the main risk factors is that women should be aware of including family history of breast cancer, increasing age and any previous diagnosis of other breast cancer. White women’s family and genetic makeup cannot be controlled there are certain risk factors that can be modified in an attempt to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. Many people believe women could prevent a lot of breast cancers with lifestyle changes.

One of those factors includes being overweight. YouTube video Breast cancer screening the debate filmed February 28 2013 talk about how the numerous studies have linked on increase weight and height with a women’s risk of developing breast cancer. After a women goes through menopause, being overweight can increase a woman’s risk by weight and extra fat increase the production of estrogen outside the ovaries and contributes to the overall level of estrogen in the body. Therefore making healthy lifestyle choices can be good for a women of any time in her life. Weight control also ties in with the amount of physical activity a women has in her daily life. Exercise may lower a woman’s lifetime risk of acquiring the disease. Many people believe that activity reduces risk by putting on the age that a women has her first menstrual cycle and reducing the frequency of regular menstrual cycles. The decrease to the amount of the estrogen hormone a woman is exposed to many enhance to ability to slow the growth rate and to kill cancer cells if they even develop. The video also back up a link between alcohol intake and an increased chance of developing breast cancer. Overall women that drink an average of three drinks a day have a forty percent higher chance of developing the disease versus non drinkers. Those video supports my thesis and help to found that alcohol alters the way a woman’s body metabolizes estrogen. As estrogen level rise the risk of developing the disease does also.

In sum, the important thing to remember is that having no risk factors should not give you a false sense of security. It is vital for each women to be aware of their own personal risk factors for developing cancer, and what they can do to decrease their chances with simple lifestyle changes. Women are encouraged to talk to their doctors and do their own research to further inform themselves.

obesity in New York City

New York is a huge city in which we have many accessibilities: transportation, schools, playgrounds and stores that are near to us and that most of the time can be positive but also can be negative. This map represents every neighborhood of New York City in which fast food restaurants are everywhere and it just take minutes to reach any of them, people have easy accessibility to fast food restaurants and that is one reason why they can consume them more, having more probabilities of getting obesity and other diseases due to the massive consumption of unhealthy food.

                                                         Obesity in New York city

Obesity is a chronic disease that we can get if we do not have control of the quality and quantity of the food that we eat, it can be caused by different factors like genetic, behavioral and environmental. And it can cause many other illnesses such as: diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. Something that we must worry about is the fact that obesity had a significant increase in our society specially in New York city and it is not just affecting adults but children as well. Michael R. Bloomberg, a recognized entrepreneur that has made different campaigns against obesity, mentioned in the video “ NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s war on obesity” that this illness is killing five thousand people per year which is something to worry about. It is not a secret that new York is a big city in which people are busy all the time and many of them might not press attention to what they eat and that could be one of the possible reasons why the rate of obesity has increased within the last years and also, It is important to say that many people constantly visit and consume fast food restaurants because it is easier for them to consume that kind of food rather than healthy aliments, that is why that I present as my thesis statement that although fast food restaurants is more affordable for people with low income, it is one of the main reason why the rate of obesity has increased causing other illnesses and showing that it will get worse in the future.

Junk food is more affordable for people with low income

There are thousands of fast food restaurants in New York city and it is very accessible for people to reach them because they are in every neighborhood, in every corner. Among the most famous fast food restaurants are McDonald’s, Popeyes, burger king, Kennedy Fried Chicken and many more to where people go every day and consume their food. One of the reasons why people go to those restaurants it is not just because they enjoy their food, but also because that kind of food is cheaper and more affordable than healthy food. It is not easy for people with low income to spend more money in expensive food when they can spend their money in food that is unhealthy but cheaper. “The problem of the consumption of junk food is due to the inaccessibility of unhealthy food” (Carrol, Fernstrom, NBC News), in this article the main idea is that it is more easier for people to buy food in fast food restaurant because they will spend less money which is something that conduce people to the consumption of unhealthy food. Another interesting article that evokes the same idea is “Eating Healthy Will Cost You $550 More Per Year, Study Reveals” by Carey Polls mentions that unhealthy food is about $1.50 cheaper per day, or about $550 per year, than healthy food which is something that completely proves why people can get obesity easier than before nowadays and that is why people tend to consume that kind of food. Also, it is important to say that the cost of the life in New York city is anything but very expensive and people is always worrying to pay all the bills: rent, electricity, cable, ways of transportation and many of them do not have a big budget to afford healthy food that are more expensive than the food they will find in fast food restaurants.

The consumption of junk food is the main reason why obesity has increased causing more illnesses.

Some of the main aspects of junk food is that they are high processed, and they contain big numbers of calories, that highly contributes to a person to become obese. Since people visit fast food restaurants every day, they are consuming two to three hundred of calories per day in meals plus the calories that have in the soft drinks that they also consume, the more people consume the unhealthy food the more they can get obese and people find this kind of restaurants everywhere as we can see in the picture, they have more probabilities to visit them more often which is something that raises the rate of obesity in this city. The article Reversing the Obesity in New York city, An Action Plan for Reducing the Promotion and Accessibility of Unhealthy Food mentions that:
“We use the term unhealthy food to describe products high in sugar, fat, or sodium (salt) and with few other essential nutrients. This includes packaged convenience foods, fast foods, soft drinks, and sweet and salty snacks. These foods make it easy to eat many more calories than we need, causing weight gain”. ( City University of New York campaign against diabetes public health Association of New York City)
as they clearly explain consuming junk food which is a kind of unhealthy food can make a person get weight easily, as more people consume them very often, it is wise to say that eating junk food in New York city is the main reason why many people ( adults and children) are becoming obese nowadays, That is why people should have a control over the food that they eat, they should be more aware of the quantity and the quality that those aliments have because even though not everybody knows obesity as a chronic disease, it is a reality that it is very dangerous to our health that is why we should avoid eating unhealthy food because as a result of doing that we can get this dangerous disease, also, the article mentions that as a result if having obesity we can get other illnesses such as hypertension, cancer, heart disease and more.

Obesity Will Have a Massive increase in The Future

If people continue consuming fast food restaurants so frequently as they use to do nowadays, is inevitable that New York city will have a massive increase in obesity and other illnesses in the future, In the article Fat and Getting Fatter: U.S. Obesity Rates to Soar by 2030 by Sharon Begley mentions that “If Americans stick to their eating and exercise habits, future historians will look back on the early 21st century as a golden age of svelte” (Routers). The article clearly depicts how a big part of our society is already affected by obesity and a big part of them are children. There are 35.7 percent adults and 16.9 percent of children that registered this year that have obesity, also, there are 7.9 million new cases of diabetes each year showing that if people do not change their bad habits when they eat by 2030 more than 42 percent of society can be obese and reports indicate that most of the people that have obesity have allow income and people with low income use to live in neighborhoods with no playgrounds or places where they can exercise so that they could not fight this disease and the rate of deaths can also increase.

                                                   Conclusion

New York is a big city in which we can find fast food restaurants everywhere and it just take some minutes to get to them, as many people with low income do not have the same possibilities of affording healthy food as other people with a higher income, they seemed forced to consume these fast food restaurants that are everywhere in this city. As a result of the consumption of junk food, it is reasonable to say that it is the main reason why many people ( adults and children) are getting obese nowadays and that means that means that those people have more probabilities to get other dangerous illnesses that can kill them if they do not take care of their situation and go for help before it is too late. Also, a big part of the future generation seems to be jeopardized if people do not change their eating habits. Personally, I have gone to these kind of restaurants with my family and I honestly can say that many of the food that they have is very high in fat which is something that we need in our body but if we abuse of it we can have serious health problem, that is why people should be more concerned about obesity and the damage that they are causing to their body when they consume junk food. Nowadays, it is needed to educate people about nutrition and what kind of food we cannot eat to much in order to maintain our body and organs healthy and to have a longer life. We need to have a control over the things that we eat because in that way we can stay healthy and we can prevent that many diseases come to our body making a terrible damaged to ourselves. And the most important thing to remember is that if we are going to visit fast food restaurants we should not go very often because that kind of food is not healthy at all so it is important to control the situation in order to maintain a good health and prevent many illnesses, but more important to make sure that our future generations will also have the opportunity to be healthy.
