Research Proposal by Jean Carlos Feliz Green

Last Thursday, I went to my english class and my professor Michael gave me and my partners our last assignment for this course. For this assignment, my research proposal will be “New York Tourism”. I chose this topic due to the fact that I have always liked the tourism, how it works, how you can enjoy it and New York City is an excellent stage to talk about this topic. I have been thinking the whole weekend about this and I decided to talk about the amount and diversity of people who see New York City as a tourist place. It is normal for us to see new york streets like normal places that we visit frequently, but people from other countries see these streets like something new and interesting. I also want to talk about places where you can go if you are doing New York tourism. Having consider that New York City is one of the most popular cities in the world, I would like to talk about some places that every person who visit New York City should go there, including some places that not everyone knows. The last thing that I would like to talk about is how safe is New York City when it comes to sightseeing. I want to show the differences between sightseeing in NYC and sightseeing in other countries.

My plan to do this assignment is basically to read some articles about tourism in New York City and go to some places and ask people around why they think those places are interesting. I also plan to take some photos and maybe use some pictures of places where I have already been to use it in my assignment.

Lesly Mejia: Research Proposal

My research essay will be focused on the rates of type 2 diabetes in the Bronx for the last 10 years. I am interested in this topic and  feel like its important because I actually grew around family members who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and I feel like having diabetes is actually a very common disease now a days. I have also noticed that most of the people i’ve seen with diabetes are hispanic people. One of the questions that I would like to learn about is whether the Bronx has one of the highest rates of diabetes and I would also like to know what ethnicities and ages in New York have the highest rates ? If so, why does the Bronx have the highest rates ? What contributes to the fact that these rates are the highest of all boroughs. The Bronx is known as one of the poorest boroughs of New York and based of prior knowledge that I have, some people, including myself actually, consider fresh healthy food to be more expensive than fast food, I believe this could also be a possible reason that contributes to these rates. Is there a reason why the cost of healthy food is more expensive than the cost of fast food? While doing my research I would like to find out how can we make these rates lower ? In my map, I would like to include what certain parts of New York have the highest rates of type 2 diabetes and I would like to include the prevalence of diabetes by race/ethnicity.

Research Proposal

The topic I have chosen for my research proposal is abortion rates in different regions and whether or not the history and restrictions surrounding abortion laws for that region can affect the abortion rate. I will research the different abortion rates in different regions as well as the abortion laws in that region to explain how one can affect the other. Some regions I would like to research specifically are Russia, Cuba, China and the United States. The reason I would like to discuss those specific regions are because Russia has one of the highest rates of abortion, like Cuba, and both have laws legalizing abortion. The US also has a law legalizing abortion, but the abortion rates are way lower. Although, China has a lower abortion rate than most regions I would like to discuss how the harsh restrictions surrounding the legalization of abortions have an impact on its rate. I chose to discuss abortion rates because I feel as though it is a topic that was once so relevant, but now so under looked around the world. I would also like to show the difference in abortion rates between regions where abortion is legal vs regions where it isn’t legal. I will map out regions where abortion is legal and illegal to show the difference in abortion rates and refer back to the difference in the abortion laws to explain that difference. My main purpose of choosing this topic is to inform and educate people on the different laws pertaining abortion in different parts of the world as well as provide examples of how women from within these regions have and are being affected due to the abortion laws they are forced to abide by.

Research Proposal – Jhanilda C.

I will research the many benefits New York public libraries have for families and children and how this ties into the different approaches to contacting problematic children, and how this has had changed over the years. Many people and families have trouble when it comes to childcare and child entertainment, even getting their children to focus in school or in their day to day lives, many parents find an easy solution by setting them up for afterschool library programs which benefit them in many ways. The NYPL has a variety of programs for kids of all ages, from homework help to arts and crafts, hands-on science workshops, and more. All this kind of help helps children develop a better understanding of what they may be struggling with or with that they may need to learn in the future. My research proposal topic is on how the NYPL has helped and benefit children’s education over the past 10 years and how these programs will improve for the community’s children better future.

RESEARCH PROPOSAL: GENTRIFICATION BITES THE BIG APPLE.

It has become common today to dismiss low income residents of New York city in each of the five boroughs by affluent and often times new out of state dwellers and businesses. This phenomenon is termed as gentrification; a process of changing the character of a neighborhood by the influx of affluent residents. Greenpoint in Brooklyn specifically is an interesting neighborhood  to delve into. Young millennials especially from different parts of the world like Australia, France even Connecticut and Maine have displaced majority of the locals in what was a predominantly Polish immigrant neighborhood. This demographic wave has been referred to as ‘hipsters’ because of the unconventional and fancy lifestyles they tend to live; folk and indie music tastes, vegetarian diets, brunching at expensive cafes and thrift shopping and artistic jobs.

Many people assume that it began between 1990 to 2014. Greenpoint was once an industrial  area with warehouses and dumpsites oozing of sewage but that changed when the state demanded the British petroleum and Amoco natural oil and gas companies to clean up the neighborhood . Today you will find expensive high rise complexes and a new business as far as long island city sprawling from corners replacing those who are not able to keep up with the high rent rates. It is often said that after the long term leases expire, landlords continue to raise the rents because they know millennials are willing to pay to live in the hub. Polish family owned stores like bakeries have been misplaced and the older generation blame it on the vicious rent rates.

The map will show the new East river ferry that those going into Manhattan prefer as a quicker form of transport together with the G train that links to Williamsburg and Citi bike docks that have infiltrated the quint polish streets of Greenpoint.

Rats and the City

Rat Map NYC

For centuries now New York City has been struggling with rats, yet no one had ever managed to come up with a plan to eradicate this infestation in one of the world’s greatest cities. Numerous attempts and different approaches have been undertaken to no avail. A New York Times article from September of this year opens up with the following words: “Traps. Poison. Birth control. Dry ice. And now, what city officials are touting as a high-tech solution: drowning”(1). As it turns out the city has never ended the war on rats yet the methods as disturbing as they sound have not proven effective as even the latest gadget deployed in the effort to control the population of vermis has failed in the very first trials in the real world. New York has ranked at the top list of rat infested cities in the US, according to recent studies (2). The rat sighting has become such a trivial daily life moment that we have witnessed epic memes and viral videos with titles such as “Rat vs Pigeon”(3), where a rat fights, kills and drags a pigeon to feast upon in Brooklyn, NYC or “Pizza Rat”(4), where an engorged rat casually drags a piece pizza pie down the stairs in the city’s subway system. The whole city is compromised and no one is safe anywhere, but according to a Forbes article from the spring of 2019 the borough with the highest rat population is Brooklyn (5), based on reports by sighting, yet I truly believe that the charts are off since they are based on 311 signals and not any actual science behind them. I can attest to that since I’ve personally stumbled upon rats, roaming the streets of the borough I reside in, The Bronx, but to this date never have I bothered reporting that to any institution whatsoever.

Research Proposal-Gangs of Brooklyn

The topic that I’m researching is foucused on the gangs of brooklyn. Since the mid to late 1980s all of New York at some point had gangs running rampant. Some of you may know how the term “Hey, I’m walkin here!” is such a common prhase in New York that is due to the itailian mob running New York and they still do. My reason for researching this is because I’m really interested in how they operate? Why their influence can reach so many people? What factions still exist? Even after the itailan mob there wrere so many more gangs that rose to power. You’ve got the Bloods, Crips, Private Houses and Projects. These gangs all live in or near brooklyn. When i was a kid, I unfortunately had to deal with random encounters from gang members but it never escalated to me join one. At this point I was always aware of anyone that I thought would be in a gang and try to stay away from them. Now I have to gather all the information I can in order to solve these questions. While metioning only bad gangs that can harm people there are good ones that actually help their communities. There are multiple angles to cover something like this. The main focus is to observe the backgrounds of gang presence in brooklyn, why they can leave an impact, and if we are truly safe from gangs, if not what can the police do to suppress gang activity or can the police do anything at all againt them.

The fight against breast cancer

The fight against breast cancer

Breast cancer is the first cancer in women in both developing and developed countries. My learning will be based on the following questions: first, how can we diagnose breast cancer in women? second, how can we prevent breast cancer in women? and third, what is the symbol of breast cancer in women?. In the United States as everywhere in the world, many women are dying as a result or because of breast cancer. There now the government of America must force preventive measures to reduce the rate of breast cancer mortality in women. Breast cancer most begins in the glandular tissue called  lobules. The fight against breast cancer in women at the national or international  level must be based on noising public awareness of the breast cancer problems because many women do not know overweight  increases the risk of breast cancer especially in menopausal women. In addition many women do not know that having breast cancer significantly increases the risk of developing a second breast cancer. However all women should understand that physical activity is associated with decreased risk off breast cancer. By sensitizing women  then will understand that age heredity women they antecedents but also smocking alcohol overweight one a risk factor for breast cancer. That’s why it is recommended to have a regular gynecologist follow up for all women. Through consultation the gynecologist maybe required to prescribe a mammogram especially if it defects an abnormality.

Research Proposal by Georgia.

Functionality is a must in this time and age. In my research assignment the topic i have chosen “Autism is a Disability”. What have already know is that it is a disability because if you can’t function 100% in the world, understanding right from wrong or anything that has to do with cognitive thinking is a disability and a lot of people with autism are very highly functional but they lack something, which makes it fall under the disability umbrella. Autism, however can be defined as broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills , repetitive behaviors and non verbal communication. What i would like to find out is which borough in New York has the highest rate of people with autism, can they live on their own, do they really know what they are doing, and finally what are the causes. All over the world people raises questions and concern about autism. Where in the world did autism originally started, it started in forest Mississippi. What kind of behavior triggers autism, common triggers including disturbing breaks in routine, lack of sleep, noises, lights or smell. Which part of the brain is mostly affected is the the cerebellum and it reduces the size in parts of the cerebellum. Why do children with autism and intellectual disability have medical fears and phobias because they believe people will harm them. How is autism diagnosed, diagnosing autism can be difficult however doctors usually look at the child’s behavior and development to make diagnose.

Research proposal

I will research the reasons and consequences of having an abortion. Many people do an abortion but they do not know how that going to impact their life It is still going on in the world because the people who getting an abortion might have a reasons why they do not want to keep the pregnancy and the abortion is unsafe for some people to survive. I will be mapping the percentage of an abortion in U.S, For Example In NYC many people going and abortion. I could like to focus on some reasons, consequences and percentages of having an abortion. My questions I would like to learn about my topic is why the abortion affect some women’s for not having a children? Why an abortion cause death? I will be mapping the percentages of each states that is having an abortion because it is interesting to known those information. (Where) In USA, (Which part) of the United States of America have a highest percent of abortion. (How) long the abortion has been legal in USA and if it is legal for a teen of having an abortion.( Why) the abortion affect of women’s in their future because everybody is different.( When) the law has been passed of having an abortion is legal if they does not want to keep the pregnancy. This project will help me get a lot of information about abortion that i want to know for a long time ago.
